Approximately 3.3 tonnes of SMS are produced per each tonne of mushrooms and thus, SMS management is a significant challenge for mushroom growers. In Europe, mushroom growing generates annually more than 3.65Mtn of SMS that need to be managed according to regulations, with management costs that in average, amount 29.2 M€ for the sector annually. In fact, mushroom growers have to pay to get rid of SMS waste (6-10 €/tn).

SMARTmushroom solution: SMS-ADryer plant will enable converting 36,000 tonnes of fresh SMS material annually that currently generates loses (€6-10/Tn) into 8,500 tonnes of organic fertilizer pellets (90-120€/Tn) market value.

SMS will produce biogas, useful to dry the SMS into a dryer. The biogas also could be used as power source for the company.

As a result, farmers using SMS-ADryer will achieve reduction in storage and transportation costs, enabling to sell to any region in Europe a new product adapted to conventional broadcast spreaders.

The main goal of SMARTmushroom is to help mushroom growers and cooperatives to solve their most pending production problems which the utilization of SMS.

SMARTmushroom will introduce circular economy by upscaling SMS waste to a very valuable organic fertilizer.
